5 best legal dramas to watch in 2023

Many are interested in good old-fashioned court-room dramas. I know I do. The movies are a great way to learn a thing or two about law and also to watch your favourite actor’s eccentric performance. For example, their wrap-up speech at the end where the lead tries to get justice for the innocent who he/she is trying to help out.

With all that’s said, here are some of my top 5 best legal dramas you should watch in 2023.

A Few Good Men

A Few Good Men is considered one of Hollywood’s best legal dramas ever. The movie has a star cast of actors like Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, and Jack Nicholson. The film is based on Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s stage drama of the same name and tells the story of two marine officers who have been accused of the murder of a fellow marine at Guantamno Bay and are now on trial on the US mainland. The only person who can save them is a young lawyer Daniel Kaffee (Cruise) who after thorough investigation finds there is more to the story then what is seen.

A Time to Kill

Another good legal drama with a strong star cast like Mathew McConaughey, Samuel Jackson, Sandra Bullock, and Donald Sutherland is a story about a black man Carl Lee who, in a fit of rage, murders two white individuals who brutally raped his daughter. After getting caught by the police, Lee turns to Jake Brigance, a young white lawyer, for help. Brigance has a tough test here, considering the acquital possibility of Carl Lee and the ongoing threat he is facing from white supremacists as a result of fighting Carl Lee’s case.

Presumed Innocent

Still of Harrison Ford and Bonnie Bedelia from Presumed Inncocent.

The legal thriller starring Harrison Ford and directed by Alan J. Pakula is a story about a prosecutor who is accused of raping and murdering a fellow colleague with whom he had an ongoing affair despite being a family man. With all eyes pointed on him, he turns to a crafty defense lawyer to prove his innocence and reputation at all cost.

The Lincoln Lawyer

Still of Mathew McConaughey in the movie The Lincoln Lawyer.

Mathew McConaughey is back as defence attorney Mick Haller in The Lincoln Lawyer after his first successful legal drama movies in the 1990s like Amistad and A Time to Kill. The film tells the story of Los Angeles defence attorney Haller who has to fight a case of Louis Roulette, who is accused of assaulting a prostitute. Things get murkier as the case proceeds as he digs more profound into the Roulette case, and he has a difficult choice to save his client from the severe accusation.

My Cousin Vinny

Still of Marisa Tomei and Joe Pesci from the movie, My Cousin Vinny.

After some serious legal dramas on the list, here is a fun one. My Cousin Vinny is the funniest legal drama and the movie has even won one Oscar in the 1990s. The films tells the story of two New York kids who are accused of murder in rural Alabama, and desperate with no money, they call their cousin Vinny, a loudmouth lawyer with zero trial experience. The movie gets funnier and funnier with Joe Pesci’s humor when the trial start for the New Yorkers.

So that’s all for today, folks. Check out more reviews on my blog. Thank you for your time, and stay tuned until next time!
